Cantamici is a choir of about forty voices founded in 1994. David Necklen took over as Music Director in 2005, and under his leadership Cantamici has continued to deserve its reputation for wide-ranging and high-quality performances in concert. We perform 5 or 6 concerts each year, many helping to raise money for local charities. The choir seeks to organise tours in this country or abroad every two years or so.
Of our July 2011 concert, the Leicester Mercury reported "Vivaldi's Gloria ... , its pure, direct message of pleasure brilliantly captured by all voices ... ". Commenting on a performance of Durufle's Requiem during an Easter meditation, the Mercury reviewer stated "This was a moving performance of a work deserving to be played more frequently ... The performances by the choir were of a high standard ...".
The name “Cantamici” is derived from the Italian cantare, to sing, and amici meaning friends. Singing with friends remains an important principle underpinning the choir and several social events are built into our programme each year.
